Assessing international pupil mobility:

Intercultura Assessment Protocol

Pupil mobility is a core educational activity within the process of internationalising secondary school education. However, it presents a number of challenges, including the assessment of the competences acquired during the experience abroad: what should be evaluated and how?

Protocollo di valutazione Intercultura immagine insegnate

In 2018 the EU issued the Council recommendation on automatic recognition of learning periods abroad. In the field of general secondary education, the EU calls on Member States to “…make substantial progress towards automatic mutual recognition [so that…] the outcomes from a learning period of up to one year abroad in another Member State during upper secondary education and training are recognised in another ...”

Fondazione Intercultura, in collaboration with the University of Udine, conducted an action research in the context of the Italian upper secondary school, involving more than one hundred teachers and an international group of experts. The result is the Intercultura Assessment Protocol: a model for assessing the competences acquired by pupils during a mobility programme.

Transformative space for intercultural learning

In addition to being a tool for assessing intercultural competence, the Intercultura Assessment Protocol is also a transformative space for intercultural learning, as well as an innovative assessment model that is sustainable for the teachers who adopt it, and that can be easily adapted in contexts other than pupil mobility.
